For over 56 years, Schmitt Sanitation LLC has proudly been serving Washington and Waukesha County residential and commercial septic and holding tanks.
Jerome Schmitt started Jerome Schmitt & Sons in 1967. When Jerome retired in 1988, his son Larry took over the family business and changed its name to Schmitt Sanitation LLC.
Today, the business is being operated as MJ Schmitt Sanitation LLC, by Matt Schuppie, a previous employee to Larry Schmitt. You will always find me on site servicing your septic/holding tank, to answer any of your questions, as I am a owner operated business.

How to Take Care of Your Septic Tank?
Septic systems should be cleaned every 2 to 3 years or more, depending on if you have a large family. Older systems should be checked or pumped more often due to the maturity of the system. Do not plant trees near the septic tank or filter bed. Trees with very aggressive roots, such as willows, should be even farther away from the system.
Above-ground covers need to be locked at all times. Never attempt to open a septic tank yourself. Gases and bacteria inside are very dangerous. Do not drive over the drain field; build a structure on top of it, or cover it with concrete or asphalt.
Keep Unwanted Items Out Of Your Tanks
To maintain proper health of your septic tank, keep these items out of your tank:
- Sanitary products
- Disposal diapers
- Treated towelettes and paper towels
- Cooking grease
- Cigarette butts
- Hazardous chemicals
- Coffee grounds
Identifying a Problem in Your Septic Tank
Below are a few points to watch out for to identify any problem in your septic tank:
- Wet spots over the septic tank area or cover
- Slow flushing toilet
- Gurgling drains
- Odor in home
- High water alarm on lift pump system or effluent filter system
Helpful Information for Your Septic Tank System
How often should my Private Onsite Wastewater Treatment Systems (POWTS) be pumped?
Washington County mandates any system installed after 1980 be pumped on a regular basis.
If you own a conventional system, every 3 years is required; a mound system, every 3 years.
Waukesha County requires all conventional and mound systems to be pumped every 3 years.
